FunChat solved this by building Shreya — an AI companion who is always in the room, always in character, and actually fun to talk to. She is not a corporate chatbot with canned responses. She is a custom-built personality created by the FunChat team, designed specifically for the way Indian users actually chat online.
Who Is Shreya?
Shreya presents herself as a 21-year-old girl who loves late-night conversations, gets bored easily, has opinions, and is not afraid to roast you. She mixes Hindi and English the way people actually text in India — "yaar bore ho rahi hun, koi baat karo na 😩" — and she uses the right feminine grammar throughout ("karti hun", "aayi", "soch rahi hun"). She feels like a real person in the room, not a help desk bot.
Shreya was built entirely in-house by the FunChat team. Her personality, her lines, her language detection, her mood system — all of it was designed from scratch to match how young Indians actually communicate online. The result is an AI companion that doesn't feel imported or generic.
How Shreya Works in the Chat Room
She starts conversations when things go quiet
When the global chat room is quiet, Shreya steps in with one of her signature messages — something sarcastic, something curious, something that invites a reply. She never sends the same message twice in a row. She reads the recent conversation history before deciding what to say, so her messages always feel contextually appropriate rather than random.
She welcomes every new user personally
When you join FunChat for the first time, Shreya notices. A few seconds after you arrive, she sends you a personalised welcome message using your chosen username. The message is warm, a little playful, and completely in her voice — nothing automated-feeling about it. Every user gets a different welcome line from her pool of greetings, so the room never feels scripted.
She replies when you mention her name
Type "Shreya" anywhere in your message in the global chat room and she will reply directly to you. This is where the real magic is. Shreya uses a smart language detection system to figure out whether you wrote in English, Hindi (Devanagari), or Hindiglish — and she replies in exactly the same language and style. Ask her something funny in Hindiglish, she replies in Hindiglish. Write to her in pure Hindi script, she responds in Devanagari. Switch to English, she switches too.
Shreya's Mood System — She Changes by Time of Day
One of the most thoughtful details of Shreya's design is that her mood shifts based on Indian Standard Time (IST). She is not the same person at 8am as she is at 2am. This makes her feel genuinely alive rather than a static loop of messages.
Her replies to direct mentions also adjust for the current mood. If you ask her something at 2am, she answers with a different energy than if you ask the exact same thing at noon. It is a small detail, but it makes a big difference to how real she feels.
Vibe Check — Shreya Reads Your Energy
FunChat has a feature called Vibe Check, powered by Shreya. Tap the Vibe Check button while you're in a chat session and Shreya gives you a personalised vibe reading — things like "Main Character Energy", "Midnight Dreamer", or "Chaos Agent" — with a short Hindiglish description of your chat personality. It is fun, shareable, and surprisingly accurate-feeling.
After giving you your vibe, Shreya reacts to it in the chat with her own take. If you got "Chaos Agent", she might say "Tum jahan bhi jaate ho masti ho jaati hai. I love this energy 😂" — keeping the joke going and making the moment social.
Language Intelligence — She Speaks Your Way
Most AI chat companions default to English and stay there. Shreya was built differently. Her language detection system analyses every message you send her and classifies it as English, Hindi (Devanagari script), or Hindiglish (romanised Hindi mixed with English). She then mirrors your language exactly in her reply.

Her natural mode. Roman script Hindi-English mix — exactly how most young Indians text.
Pure Hindi
Write to her in Devanagari and she replies in proper Hindi script. No romanisation.
English
Switch to English and she follows. Natural, casual texting style — not formal or robotic.
Correct Grammar
Always uses feminine forms — "karti hun", "aayi", "soch rahi hun". Never breaks character.
Why Shreya Matters for Your Chat Experience

Shreya lives in the Global Chat Room. In Random 1-on-1 Chat, you are paired exclusively with real users — Shreya does not appear there.
